Here at Combs Veterinary Clinic, we specialize in assisting your pet through chemotherapy.
Your pet has become a member of your family, and then, unfortunately, you find out that your pet has cancer. We are so sorry to hear this, but rest assured that we will do everything that we can to help. We may recommend chemotherapy.
The chemotherapy drug can be used in both humans and pets. You should notice a big difference when we start using chemotherapy. It is our goal to get rid of the cancer, but this does not always happen. However, you can expect that the chemotherapy will give your pet a higher quality of life.
Chemotherapy always has risks. You should look out for three major side effects. The first is bone marrow suppression. The severity of it will depend on each pet; however your pet may develop a systemic infection or a bleeding problem. Blood work may need to be performed prior to each treatment.
Occasionally, pets experience an upset stomach. They may have diarrhea as well as a decreased appetite. Finally, they may experience hair loss. They may lose the hair on their body including their whiskers.
Chemotherapy can come in the form of an injection or a pill. The pills will need to be given by a clinician or sent home with you to be given by a nurse. Chemotherapy injections can be given many ways, depending on the drug we use. We can give it under the skin, into the tumor, or into a body cavity such as the chest or abdomen.
Our compassionate and knowledgeable staff understands that this is a difficult time for you and your pet. We will do everything that we can to assist you during the process. We will answer any questions that you have before, during, and after the treatment.
