Leptospirosis is becoming more and more prevalent in Monroe County and surrounding areas. We have seen three patients in the past two months that have tested positive for this devastating disease.
Leptospirosis is a zoonotic bacterial disease; meaning it is transmissible to humans. It spread through urine of infected animals and lives in water, such as streams, lakes, rivers, and puddles; and also moist soil.
Signs include flu-like symptoms such as fever, decreased appetite, vomiting, diarrhea, dehydration, weakness, and lethargy.
In the most severe cases, Leptospirosis can lead to kidney and/or liver failure, and death.
Luckily, there is a vaccination for this disease. We’ve offered it for several years and have recommended it for animals that may be at risk; but are now recommending it for all dogs regardless of their lifestyle due to the increasing prevalence of Leptospirosis.
Beginning January 1, 2019, we are requiring current Leptospirosis vaccinations for all dogs that will be boarding in our kennel.
